What to Do When Phalaenopsis Orchid Potting Medium Is Too Wet? Causes of Dark Green Leaves and Solutions
The flowers of the Phalaenopsis orchid are shaped just like their name suggests, resembling butterflies about to take flight, and each bloom looks as if it has been especially favored by nature with its beauty. That is why Phalaenopsis orchids have become one of the must-have flowers for the Lunar New Year in recent years. However, caring for them is not easy and often leaves growers puzzled.
Recently, I received a message from a follower in the backend. They asked that a few days ago they bought several Phalaenopsis orchids at the flower market for ten yuan each, but after getting home they found the potting medium was very wet and the leaves were dark green in color. I am a bit worried whether this will affect its health. This time I decided not to rush to change its bark and instead observe for a few days first to see whether the potting medium can dry out faster on its own. After all, plants' ability to adapt is sometimes stronger than we imagine, right?

Regarding this grower's question, judging by the preferences of Phalaenopsis orchids, although they do prefer moisture, potting medium that is too wet is indeed a problem. But to analyze the question of whether to replace the bark with new bark, I may not be able to give you the most accurate judgment, because unlike sphagnum moss, I cannot judge the internal condition just from its surface.

However, from the appearance, the plant overall still looks healthy, except that the potting medium wrapping is a bit sparse and cannot fully cover the roots. In this way, later care can easily cause fertilizer burn to the root system due to fertilizing. Based on this, I suggest you deal with the damaged roots promptly and prune away the bad ones. Doing so can promote the development of new roots.

In addition, you mentioned that the leaf color is on the dark green side, which may be a sign of insufficient light. I suggest using a method of gradually increasing light to let it receive light, and avoid placing it in a position with direct blazing sun. In this way, the plant will gradually regain its vitality.

Finally, a reminder: after you finish enjoying the flowers, be sure to cut off the flower stalk, then place the plant in a sunny spot and let it slowly adapt to the new environment. Wait until new leaves stand upright again and the plant's condition is stable before watering. At the same time, if the surrounding temperature is below 10 degrees, you may have to wait until winter is over and buy it in warm spring before watering again. In short, plant care requires patience and attentiveness. Especially when the environment changes, you should give them some time to adapt.
