What to Do When Daffodils Grow Too Tall? Learn the Right Way to Fix It
Many people like to keep a few pots of narcissus (Narcissus tazetta) at home for their rich fragrance. Sometimes, however, narcissus can grow excessively, which not only spoils its ornamental appeal but also makes it prone to toppling over, which is quite frustrating.

Excessive growth of narcissus, commonly known as leggy growth, is mainly triggered by one factor: a lack of light. Narcissus depends on ample light for photosynthesis to grow. If it is kept in a dim spot indoors for a long time, the plant will strain upward trying to capture more light, which makes the stems thin, long and weak, resulting in leggy growth.

Temperature is also an important factor. The ideal temperature for narcissus growth is between 10 and 15°C. If the ambient temperature is on the high side, especially if nighttime temperatures stay high, it will speed up growth and the stems will shoot up rapidly. In addition, over-fertilizing, especially applying too much nitrogen fertilizer, will stimulate rapid growth of leaves and stems and trigger leggy growth.

Once you notice that narcissus is growing excessively, you need to take action quickly. If poor light is the cause, move it at once to a spot with plenty of light, such as beside a south-facing window, so it can receive at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. That way the plant can photosynthesize fully, making the stems sturdier and curbing its tendency to shoot upward.

If the temperature is too high, you can put the narcissus in a slightly cooler spot, such as a balcony, where the lower nighttime temperature can slow its growth rate. If conditions allow, you can also keep the narcissus in a cool environment of 5 to 10°C for a while to help control its height.

For over-fertilizing, you can reduce the nutrient concentration in the water by changing it. Narcissus is mostly grown in water. Change the water for clean fresh water every 1 to 2 days to lower the residual fertilizer in the water and prevent nutrients from continuing to be supplied in excess.

In day-to-day care, there are also some tips for preventing narcissus from growing leggy. From the very start of planting, choose a suitable growing environment to ensure plenty of light and moderate temperature. When fertilizing, follow the instructions strictly, applying light fertilizer frequently; you can also use a dedicated narcissus nutrient solution and regulate the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to promote balanced growth of the plant.
Leggy growth in narcissus is not something to fear. As long as you understand the causes, take the right corrective steps in time and follow good preventive practices, you can keep your narcissus looking elegant and let it bloom at its most beautiful.
