The world is so big that nothing is too strange, and look-alikes are not just a human thing; plants are the same, especially evergreens and flowering plants, which can leave people completely unable to tell them apart. Among them, marigold and French marigold are so similar that even experienced gardeners cannot distinguish them at a glance. So how do you tell them apart and avoid being fooled by the vendor at the flower stall?

The reason marigold and French marigold look so similar is that both are annual herbaceous plants. If you put the two plants side by side, the overall height of marigold is 20-50 cm taller than that of French marigold. Before they bloom, they are harder to tell apart, but once they are in full bloom it is a different story: marigold flowers have smaller, more pointed petal tips and the plant grows more upright, while French marigold is relatively shorter and its flower shape looks rounder. By comparison, marigold flowers are much larger than those of French marigold, while French marigold petals are a bit sparser than those of marigold.

In terms of flower color, marigold flowers are mostly orange and golden yellow, while French marigold is mostly in the yellow range, and some also carry red markings. As for the flowering period, although both are from July to September, a real comparison shows that marigold blooms a little longer.

In everyday use, marigold and French marigold differ. The former can serve as an ornamental flower, accenting courtyards and potted displays, and can also be paired with other flowers as a cut flower in a vase. The latter, French marigold, can also serve as an ornamental flower, but because it carries its own fragrance, and that scent is what small insects fear most, growing it on a balcony in summer is ideal for repelling insects and mosquitoes.

In terms of care, marigold and French marigold are not very demanding about soil, but relatively speaking French marigold is more drought-tolerant and better suited to beginners. Marigold, on the other hand, needs coordinated attention to watering, sunlight and fertilizing.

French marigold is relatively easy to grow and suitable for beginners. It is not very demanding about soil, is more drought-tolerant, and can self-seed. Growing marigold may require more attention and careful management, including proper watering, sunlight and fertilizer.

In addition, the two plants have different flower meanings. Marigold symbolizes love, friendship, health and longevity, making it suitable as a gift for a partner, a close friend or an elderly person. French marigold represents a positive, upward drive toward things, and can be given to yourself or to friends in business.
