Can a Gloxinia still grow leaves with only one tuber left? Detailed guide to the sprouting method
Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa), as a beautiful indoor flowering plant, has quite tenacious vitality. Even if only the tuber remains, as long as it is cared for properly, it can still grow new leaves again and bloom. The key lies in providing a good growing environment and the correct care methods.

Care points:
Temperature control: keep the indoor temperature above 15°C, which is the basic condition for gloxinia growth. Too low a temperature will inhibit its metabolism, which is not conducive to the growth of new leaves.
Light management: gloxinia likes a semi-shaded environment, so avoid direct sunlight. The tuber can be placed in a position with plenty of scattered light, which both meets the light requirement and prevents rapid water evaporation caused by strong sunlight exposure.
Humidity regulation: since gloxinia is a tuberous-rooted plant, it is relatively sensitive to water. The potting soil needs to be kept moist but not waterlogged, to avoid root rot caused by prolonged dampness. Air humidity can be increased by spraying a fine mist over the soil surface to promote new leaf growth.
Nutrient supply: during the growth period of new leaves, fertilizer can be applied in moderation. It is recommended to use diluted compound fertilizer or organic quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, applied by watering the roots, to help the plant recover quickly and promote new leaf growth.

Sprouting gloxinia tubers is an important part of the propagation process. Through scientific sprouting methods, the germination rate and survival rate of the tubers can be improved.
Preparation work:
Tuber selection: choose 2- to 3-year-old tubers that have gone through dormancy; such tubers have strong vitality and a high germination rate.
Substrate preparation: the growing soil needs to be loose and breathable. A nutrient soil mixed from peat soil, vermiculite and perlite in a 3:2:1 ratio can be used.
Disinfection treatment: use disinfectants such as carbendazim or potassium permanganate to treat wounds on the tuber to prevent infection.

Sprouting steps:
Burying the tuber to sprout: during autumn or from 12 to 3 of the following year, bury the selected tuber in soil, water it thoroughly and keep the room temperature at about 22°C for sprouting. When the sprout grows to about 0.5 cm, the next step can be carried out.
Dividing the tuber: use a sharp knife to cut the tuber into 2 to 4 pieces, and each piece must have one sprout on it. During the cutting process, be careful to avoid damaging the sprout points, so as not to affect germination.
Drying the wounds: place the divided tuber pieces in mild sunlight to dry for about 1 hour, to dry the moisture on the wounds and the residual disinfectant. Do not dry them for too long, to avoid dehydration of the tuber pieces.
Potting and planting: dig a small hole in the middle of the potting soil, and bury the cut half-piece of tuber with the cut surface facing down, being careful not to bury it too deep so as not to affect germination. After planting, place it in a cool, ventilated place or a spot with scattered light for care.

Care and management:
Light: maintain exposure to scattered light, and avoid direct sunlight and long periods in a dark environment.
Watering: use the immersion method to water, so as to keep the soil loose and avoid the leaves coming into contact with water. In the rainy season, the plant needs to be moved to a sheltered place to prevent waterlogging.
Fertilizing: along with watering, apply additional thin phosphorus-potassium fertilizer nutrient solution such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate to promote growth and flowering. The dilution concentration should be controlled at more than 1:1000.
Pruning: gloxinia tolerates pruning and can be pruned into shape as needed, removing dead branches and leaves to maintain good light penetration and air circulation.

As long as the correct care methods and sprouting steps are followed, the remaining tuber of a gloxinia is fully capable of growing new leaves again and producing beautiful flowers.
