What is the difference between daffodils and tulips?
Many flower lovers are often confused about narcissus and tulips
Roots and bulbs:
Narcissus (Narcissus spp.) has a bulbous tuber that looks very much like garlic, with a brown membranous tunic covering the surface; once peeled away, layer upon layer of fleshy scales can be seen.

Tulips (Tulipa spp.), by contrast, have a true bulb that is more oval in shape, with a tunic that varies in color, including brown, yellow and so on; the texture is relatively thin, and the basal plate is clearly visible on the bulb.
Leaves:
Narcissus leaves are flat and strap-shaped, jade green in color, with a thin layer of white bloom on the surface and an excellent gloss; the leaves grow directly from the base of the tuber and are tightly arranged.
Tulip leaves usually number 3 - 5 per plant and are broader than those of narcissus; some are lance-shaped, while others are ovate, with obvious veins on the surface, and the color is deeper than that of narcissus leaves, being a dark green tone.
Flowers:
Narcissus flowers are mostly solitary or borne in clusters of 2 - 3 at the top of the flower stem, with an umbel-like flower shape; the petals usually number 6
Tulip flowers, on the other hand, grow singly at the top of the stem, and the flower shape varies, including cup-shaped, bowl-shaped, ovate and so on; the petals may be single or double, and the colors are extremely rich, covering many colors such as red, yellow, purple and pink, and there are even two-colored varieties.
Growing habits:
Narcissus prefers a warm, humid environment and can tolerate partial shade; it usually blooms in winter and spring, and its demand for light is not particularly strict, so it can grow well in indoor diffused light.
Tulips, by contrast, prefer a cool, dry, sunny environment and are quite cold-hardy; the suitable growing temperature is 15 - 20°C, and it usually blooms in spring; sufficient light is the key to ensuring flower quality and quantity.
Symbolism:
Narcissus symbolizes longing and reunion; during the Spring Festival, many people choose to grow a pot of it to add a festive atmosphere to the holiday.
Tulips, meanwhile, symbolize love, charity, honor, beauty and so on; tulips of different colors also carry different meanings, for example red tulips symbolize passionate love, while purple tulips symbolize nobility and mystery.
Now everyone can clearly tell narcissus and tulips apart! Next time you come across them, don't mix them up again.
