Since ancient times, many scholars and writers have written poems depicting the beauty of orchids, and among the orchid family, the "Phalaenopsis" (moth orchid) is especially beloved. The reason is that its flower colors are diverse, and the posture of its flowers is like butterflies dancing gracefully, making people marvel at nature's extraordinary craftsmanship. However, for a beautiful flower like the Phalaenopsis, some vendors even claim that it carries a floral fragrance. Is this true? Most varieties on the market cannot give off any scent, and why is that?

According to incomplete statistics, there are as many as over a hundred Phalaenopsis varieties. Although most of them do not have a strong floral fragrance, because the flowers themselves have a unique and complex aroma molecular structure, they actually all do have a scent. The reason people cannot smell it in daily life is that these fragrant molecules are unstable in the air and break down very easily, and at the same time the limited data from home cultivation makes the fragrance hard to detect.

However, it is not that all orchid varieties have such a faint fragrance; some can give off an intoxicating aroma, namely varieties such as Oncidium and the orchid 'Yulu'. Compared with the Phalaenopsis, most of them do not possess the traits of most orchid varieties. The reason for this is that the flowers formed in accordance with nature.

Looking deeper in detail, in its evolution the Phalaenopsis no longer chose to use a strong fragrance to attract insects for pollination, but instead uses its own distinctive blooming flower shape and colorful posture to attract other insects to come and pollinate. Therefore, it can also be considered a flower in the orchid world that focuses on appearance and form, and its main selling point is not attracting attention with fragrance.

Although 70% of Phalaenopsis orchids do not give off a fragrance, they are still among the top-selling flowers on the floral market. Their overall appearance gives people an elegant and mysterious feeling, and placing them at home easily attracts the eye, which makes many friends regard them as a representative main flower.

In addition, in order to cater to people's preferences, flower growers have also employed other methods in Phalaenopsis breeding to give them a certain amount of strong fragrance molecules. Among the Phalaenopsis varieties with a relatively strong fragrance are Cherry Tomato Phalaenopsis, Chanel Phalaenopsis, Xiangfei Phalaenopsis, Amethyst Phalaenopsis, Betel Nut Beauty Phalaenopsis, Little Lemon Phalaenopsis, and so on.
