As is well known, phalaenopsis orchids have won the favor of flower lovers with their elegant blooms, which keeps their market prices high. For flower lovers who love growing phalaenopsis orchids, if they want to keep costs down, they need to learn to propagate this precious plant. Therefore, quite a few flower lovers wonder: can phalaenopsis orchid stems be propagated by cuttings?

Can phalaenopsis orchid stems be propagated by cuttings? Yes, they can! Moreover, cuttings are the best propagation method at home. And as long as the operation is done correctly, phalaenopsis orchid stems can also root smoothly and then develop into independent plants. Now, let us explore the key steps in this process together.

First, before starting the cuttings, the first step is to select healthy, pest-free and disease-free stems, then carefully cut the stems, making sure each cutting is 10 to 15 cm long. Next, to promote rooting, properly trim the leaves at the bottom of the stem, leaving only 2 to 3 leaves.

Then, gently insert the prepared stems into the soil, with the buried depth about one third of the total length. After planting, keep the soil moderately moist in the following period, and place it in a semi-shaded environment with scattered light. Doing so helps the new cuttings take root and grow better.

Then, about half a month after cutting, the key point here is still to ensure moderate soil moisture, keeping the soil slightly moist as much as possible, and avoiding overly wet conditions, otherwise the roots are prone to rotting. When choosing a location, place it in a relatively airy spot, and give a moderate amount of extra light during the day. In addition, consider buying some rooting promoters specially designed for orchids; they can greatly help the cuttings form sturdy roots faster.

Finally, choosing the time for cuttings is also very important. Generally speaking, the peak growing season of phalaenopsis orchids, namely spring and autumn, is the most suitable (between March to May and September to November each year). This is because during this period, the flowers of phalaenopsis orchids gradually fade, followed by a wave of new shoots. Once these new shoots are observed to grow to about 5 cm long, cuttings can be taken right away. This ensures the cuttings have enough vitality and vigor, and a higher chance of surviving.
