Signs of Deteriorated Growing Medium in Phalaenopsis and How to Deal With It
In the process of growing Phalaenopsis orchids, the health of the growing medium (that is, the potting mix) is crucial to the plant's growth. Once the medium deteriorates, it usually shows itself through a series of obvious signs, and at that point measures must be taken promptly to intervene so as to ensure the healthy growth of the Phalaenopsis.
Signs of deteriorated Phalaenopsis growing medium:
Color change:A healthy Phalaenopsis growing medium is usually light brown or grayish white, whereas a deteriorated medium may darken, turning dark brown or even black. This is a direct sign that the inside of the medium has begun to rot, meaning the organic matter in it is being over-decomposed and producing substances harmful to the plant.

Abnormal smell:As the medium deteriorates, microbial activity increases markedly, causing the medium to give off a pungent musty or sour, foul odor. This smell not only shows that the medium has already deteriorated, but may also have an adverse effect on the growing environment of the Phalaenopsis.
Stunted plant growth:A deteriorated medium worsens the growing environment of the Phalaenopsis, which in turn affects the plant's normal growth. Common signs include yellowing, drooping leaves and flowers that wither early or stop blooming altogether. These growth problems are the direct result of problems with the medium.

How to deal with a deteriorated Phalaenopsis growing medium:
Prune away the rotten parts:Once you find that the medium has deteriorated, take the Phalaenopsis out of its container at once and check the roots and leaves for damage. For roots and leaves that have already rotted, use clean, sterilized scissors to prune them, making sure to cut off all the rotten parts. This prevents the rot from spreading further and protects the healthy plant tissue.

Disinfecting treatment:After pruning is done, treat the wounds with a carbendazim solution to disinfect them. This can effectively reduce the risk of microbial infection and promote wound healing. After the disinfecting treatment, place the Phalaenopsis in a well-ventilated spot to dry, ready for replanting.

Replace the medium:After dealing with the rotten parts and the disinfecting treatment, you need to replace the Phalaenopsis's growing medium with a new one. Choosing a medium suitable for Phalaenopsis growth is crucial; a mixture of sphagnum moss and wood chips is recommended as the new medium. This mixture has good water retention and air permeability, which helps the Phalaenopsis grow.
Adjust your care routine:To prevent the medium from deteriorating again, you need to adjust how you care for the Phalaenopsis. First, pay attention to how much fertilizer you use when feeding, to avoid over-concentrated fertilizer raising the medium's temperature and burning the roots. Second, when watering, wait until the medium feels dry to the touch before adding water, to avoid overwatering and making the medium too wet. Finally, make sure the Phalaenopsis grows in a warm environment, to avoid the plant being damaged by cold when the ambient temperature is too low.

Through the measures above, we can effectively deal with the problem of a deteriorated Phalaenopsis growing medium and protect the plant's healthy growth. During the growing process, observe the plant's growth closely, find and deal with abnormal situations such as a deteriorated medium in good time, and provide the Phalaenopsis with a good growing environment.
