Causes of Root Rot in Phalaenopsis Orchids and How to Fix It
As a tropical flower, the Phalaenopsis orchid (Phalaenopsis spp.) is favored by many flower enthusiasts for its elegant form and brilliant colors. However, during cultivation, root rot in Phalaenopsis orchids is a common problem that not only affects the plant's growth but can even lead to its death in severe cases.

Causes of root rot in Phalaenopsis orchids:
Poor air permeability of the growing medium and overwatering:The roots of Phalaenopsis orchids have extremely high requirements for moisture and air permeability. If you plant them in soil with poor ventilation and drainage, once too much water is applied, waterlogging easily forms. When the roots are soaked in water for a long time, they become swollen and rot. Therefore, choosing a well-aerated medium and watering reasonably are the keys to preventing root rot.
Temperatures too low:Phalaenopsis orchids originally grow in tropical rainforests and are not cold-tolerant. Their optimal growing temperature is between 15°C~20°C, and the winter overwintering temperature must not be lower than 5°C. If the temperature is too low and no insulation measures are taken, the roots of Phalaenopsis orchids will grow poorly, which in turn causes root rot.

Attack by pathogens:In tropical rainforest environments, Phalaenopsis orchids like high temperature and high humidity, but this environment also easily leads to the reproduction of pathogens. Especially after fertilizing, the fertilizer provides a good growing environment for pathogens. Once attacked by pathogens, the roots of Phalaenopsis orchids easily rot.
Improper fertilizing:Phalaenopsis orchids have a low demand for fertilizer, and too much fertilizer will prevent the roots from absorbing it, thus causing root rot. Therefore, when fertilizing, follow the principle of "small amounts, multiple times" to avoid overfertilizing.

Solutions for root rot in Phalaenopsis orchids:
Replace the potting medium and prune the rotten roots:Once root rot is found in a Phalaenopsis orchid, it should immediately be taken out of the pot and the medium clinging to the roots gently shaken off. After rinsing the root system clean with water, cut off all the rotten parts. Be careful to keep the intact parts; residual roots may also revive.
Disinfection treatment:Prepare a fresh batch of medium suitable for Phalaenopsis orchid growth. The new potting medium should be made of loose, breathable, well-draining materials, such as perlite, vermiculite, leaf mold, etc. Use the potting medium only after it has been completely sterilized. You can pour boiling water through the potting medium thoroughly, then let it cool before use.

Replanting and care:Replant the treated Phalaenopsis orchid into the new potting medium. Be careful to firm the medium around the rhizome on all sides, but do not press directly on its roots, so as not to damage the root system. After planting, move the Phalaenopsis orchid to a cool, ventilated place for care, cover it with a layer of plastic film, and keep the temperature at around 20°C. Generally, after waiting about 20days, the Phalaenopsis orchid will grow new roots.
Control watering and improve drainage:To avoid root rot happening again, strictly control the amount of water given. Follow the principle of "better dry than wet" and water only after the soil surface has dried. At the same time, make sure the potting medium has good drainage; you can lay a layer of crushed stone or ceramic granules at the bottom of the pot to increase the number and depth of drainage holes.

Regular inspection and pest and disease control:Regularly check the growing condition of the Phalaenopsis orchid, and take timely control measures when signs of pests or diseases are found. Biological control methods can be used, such as introducing predatory insects to control pest numbers; chemical control methods can also be used, such as spraying insecticides, fungicides, etc. However, when using chemical control methods, pay attention to the dosage and method of use to avoid harming the Phalaenopsis orchid.
Through the above measures, we can effectively solve the problem of root rot in Phalaenopsis orchids and help this beautiful flower regain its vitality and vigor.
