The silk floss tree, also known as the beautiful silk floss tree, beauty tree or wine-bottle cotton tree, is a deciduous tree in the mallow family (Malvaceae), genus Ceiba. It is native to Brazil and Argentina in South America, and has since been widely cultivated around the world, especially in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and Hainan in China. The silk floss tree can grow to 10-15 m tall, with an umbrella-shaped crown and a straight trunk whose lower part swells into the shape of a wine bottle - a unique form that gives it high ornamental value.

So why does the silk floss tree grow thorns? The thorns on its trunk are a self-protection mechanism. In the wild, to avoid having its flowers, branches and leaves eaten by animals, the bark of the silk floss tree's trunk grows dense, sharp spines. These spines are called "tubercle spines", and as soon as an animal brushes against the trunk it gets pricked and driven away, thus protecting the tree. However, once the silk floss tree reaches a certain age and its trunk is thick and sturdy enough, these spines gradually fall off.

The flowering period of the silk floss tree is generally from September each year to January of the following year, with October to December being the peak bloom. In the autumn and winter seasons when other plants are gradually fading, the silk floss tree is covered in pale purplish-red flowers with white centers, especially eye-catching. These flowers add a touch of romantic color to the cold winter, making it a beautiful sight in autumn and winter.

Care methods:

Light: The silk floss tree likes a sunny environment, but it also tolerates a little shade. Therefore, when planting, choose a spot with sunlight but no scorching exposure.

Soil: The silk floss tree is not demanding about soil and can adapt to acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline soils. But it grows better in loose, well-drained sandy loam or alluvial soil.

Watering: The silk floss tree is somewhat drought-tolerant and afraid of waterlogging. During the peak growing season (March-October), make sure it gets plenty of water, but do not overwater, to avoid root rot. In winter, reduce the amount of watering.

Fertilizing: If the soil is fertile, applying organic fertilizer and compound fertilizer once every 1-2 months is enough; if the soil is poor, then fertilize once every 20 days. When fertilizing, be careful not to overdo it, to avoid harming the plant.
