In the cold northern winter, the outdoor environment poses a huge challenge to plant survival. However, some hardy evergreen plants can still show tenacious vitality under such harsh conditions. Here are several recommendations for hardy evergreen plants suitable for overwintering outdoors in the north.

Chinese Pine (Pinus tabuliformis)

Chinese Pine, a needle-leaved evergreen tree in the family Pinaceae, can reach a height of 25 m. Its bark is grayish brown in tone and cracks into irregular, relatively thick scaly plates. Its needles are borne two per bundle, dark green, coarse and hard in texture, and glossy. Chinese Pine has excellent cold tolerance and a robust root system, allowing it to root firmly in the soil in the low-temperature environment of northern winters. It is not strict about soil conditions, can tolerate barren soil, and adapts to a variety of soil types. In landscape design, Chinese Pine is often used to create a solemn and majestic atmosphere; whether planted alone as a focal point or combined with other plants to form a shelterbelt, it has high ornamental value. At the same time, Chinese Pine also plays an important role in conserving soil and water and preventing wind and sand encroachment, making a positive contribution to the stability of the northern ecological environment.

Spruce (Picea)

Spruce, an evergreen tree in the genus Picea of the family Pinaceae, has a tall, upright trunk; its bark is pale grayish brown or pale brownish gray in tone and splits into irregular scaly or slightly thick plates that fall off. Its leaves are four-angled linear, slightly curved, with sharp tips, and stomatal lines on all four sides. Spruce tolerates shade and cold, prefers cool and humid climatic conditions, has a relatively shallow root system and relatively weak wind resistance, but in northern winters covered with snow it can receive a certain degree of protection. Spruce has a beautiful tree form and is a high-quality ornamental tree for courtyards, often used to create scenic forests, serve as Christmas trees, and so on. At the same time, its wood is light, soft and fine in texture and can be used for construction, furniture, and other production.

Lacebark Pine (Pinus bungeana)

Lacebark Pine is a tree species unique to China and is an evergreen tree in the genus Pinus of the family Pinaceae. Its bark is mottled white, making it especially striking among green trees, and the bark of mature trees peels off in irregular thin flakes. Its needles are borne three per bundle, coarse and hard in texture, with stomatal lines distributed on both the underside and the two sides of the upper surface. Lacebark Pine has strong cold tolerance and can withstand low-temperature environments of -30°C. It likes sunlight and can tolerate barren conditions, growing most vigorously in places with deep, fertile soil, ample sunlight, warmth and good drainage. Lacebark Pine is a precious ornamental tree species in landscape scenery and can be planted alone, in pairs or in groups; its distinctive white bark and emerald green needles set each other off, adding a different kind of color to the winter landscape.

Japanese Spindle (Euonymus japonicus)

Japanese Spindle is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the genus Euonymus of the family Celastraceae; its branchlets are four-angled and smooth and hairless on the surface. Its leaves are leathery, glossy, obovate or elliptic in shape, with rounded or acute tips and wedge-shaped bases. Japanese Spindle has good cold tolerance and can overwinter outdoors in most parts of the north. It is highly adaptable to soil conditions and is not strict about soil requirements; it likes sunlight and can also tolerate shade. Japanese Spindle is a common garden hedge plant, and after pruning it can form neat and beautiful shapes; it can also be used as an edging plant for flower beds and flower borders, or to accent courtyards, parks and other places, adding a touch of green to the winter landscape.
