Among the countless flowers in the world, the Phalaenopsis orchid is surely one of the most dazzling, simply because it has flowers that dance like butterflies, and its bright colors come in many combinations that are truly captivating. However, when turning the key to open the door to lush blooms, many problems always arise, and many flower lovers say that after repotting, the Phalaenopsis orchid often tends to die. Why is that? How can you make a Phalaenopsis orchid thrive after repotting?

Most of the time, repotting a Phalaenopsis orchid is meant to help it keep thriving, yet after repotting it often does the opposite. The reason is usually that people want the orchid to recover quickly after repotting, so they blindly choose to fertilize heavily, which makes the roots unable to breathe, and in the end this action damages the plant and kills it. So how do you repot correctly and care for it after repotting?

Correct repotting

Phalaenopsis orchids are usually repotted about once every 1-2 years. For the pot, choose an orchid-specific pot, a purple clay pot, or a ceramic pot; as long as you pick one with holes in the bottom and ensure good air permeability and no water accumulation, any of them will do. Next, choose a mixed substrate made of leaf mold, peat soil, perlite, and coconut coir, etc. Finally, if you find that the roots are aging or rotting, prune them and soak them in a potassium permanganate solution for disinfection.

Care after repotting

After repotting, the Phalaenopsis orchid roots need an adaptation period of more than half a month. At this time, you must absolutely not fertilize; at this stage, the main goal is to let it recover and regain its strength. Therefore, during this period the soil only needs to be kept moist. Be careful not to keep watering it desperately just because you like moisture, and be careful not to let water accumulate at the bottom of the pot. Next, place it in a location with good ventilation and suitable light, and during care avoid direct strong winds, air conditioning drafts, and similar conditions. Most importantly, before the Phalaenopsis orchid's root system is fully settled, do not fertilize it, as doing so will only put pressure on it. Later, wait until new roots and leaves have regained their vigor, and only then fertilize gradually.

Finally, after repotting, you also need to adjust your care method according to the weather. If abnormal conditions such as yellowing leaves or slow growth appear, promptly adjust the corresponding watering, light, air stability, and so on.
