Does the evening primrose bloom during the day or at night? How do you care for and water an evening primrose?
It could well be called the spirit of the night, the "evening primrose," a flower that blooms only at night, and once in bloom its flowers also release an elegant fragrance, letting people feel a quiet contentment amid a busy life. Potted evening primroses are mostly grown on balconies for viewing, and in the early morning, as the sun rises, it closes each flower, and this brief blooming feels as precious as something mysterious.

On the flower market, there are a great many potted evening primroses, so how do you care for one after bringing it home? Although the evening primrose opens only at night, it actually likes light, and in home care it should be placed in a sunny spot outdoors, such as a balcony or windowsill, ensuring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. If sunlight is relatively scarce in winter, you can consider using artificial supplementary lighting equipment. And during the hottest, most humid part of summer, you also need to reasonably avoid strong sunlight so the leaves do not get scorched.

As for watering, follow the principle of "better dry than waterlogged"; if you are not sure how to judge it, you can touch the soil with your hand, and a slightly moist state is best. During the spring growing season it needs more frequent watering, while in the winter dormant period, reduce the amount of watering, and at the same time keep the soil on the dry side.
If the soil becomes compacted later on, it is recommended to choose a well-draining sandy or gravelly soil first, which can better ensure the roots do not stay too moist and avoid many diseases caused by the roots. At the same time, choose a container with drainage holes in the bottom so excess water can drain out.

As for fertilizing, many flower growers think that as long as the daily light and watering routine is done well, that is enough, but that is not so! No matter what plant it is, once it is cut off from nutrient supply, in the end it will grow fewer and fewer leaves, more and more yellow leaves, and the flowering period will also be shortened. Therefore, it is recommended that during the growing period, apply liquid fertilizer 1 to 2 times each month, preferably nitrogen-based fertilizer, and when it reaches the bud stage, switch to a potassium-based fertilizer. In general, giving the evening primrose enough sunlight, appropriate water and nutrients, and good drainage conditions will let them grow luxuriantly at home, bringing the fragrance of the night and visual enjoyment.
