I believe any flower lover who enjoys brightly colored blooms has surely grown "Phalaenopsis" (moth orchid), because it comes in diverse colors, and its flowers dance like butterflies, very lively. However, growing Phalaenopsis well is not as simple as it seems, especially when it comes to caring for temperature, which is even harder to control. That is why quite a few flower lovers adopt a method called "ice cubes and temperature differences."

The so-called "ice cubes and temperature differences" method is mostly thought up by flower lovers during the hot summer, when direct sunlight is intense and they want to cool the plant down quickly. This method usually involves placing ice cubes around the flower pot, not directly into the soil. Although it seems feasible in theory, this practice may actually backfire, because the contrast between the ice cube temperature and the hot outside temperature can easily cause negative damage to the sensitive root system; in mild cases it shortens the flowering period, and in severe cases it directly stops the growth of the Phalaenopsis and causes death.

Why is the "ice cubes and temperature differences" method not recommended? Because Phalaenopsis originates from tropical regions, it is itself extremely demanding about temperature and humidity; a temperature difference that is too high or too low will exceed what it can tolerate. As soon as the root system senses an unusual temperature, it will enter a self-enclosed state, which slows down and even stalls the metabolism of its leaves. If Phalaenopsis is kept in strong temperature fluctuations for a long time, it will weaken the orchid's vitality and make it extremely fragile.

So, in the hot summer, if the "ice cubes and temperature differences" method cannot be used, how should the plant be cooled effectively? First, avoid placing ice cubes directly around the flower pot. You can instead mist water above the flower pot, or move the Phalaenopsis to a relatively well-ventilated, shady spot. In addition, you can pay close attention to the observatory's weather forecast and take preventive measures in advance for large temperature differences. Those who are able can build a small greenhouse for the Phalaenopsis, so it can grow healthily in a relatively constant temperature.

In short, using the ice cube cooling method is not advisable; it poses a great threat to the plant's life. During daily care, when encountering large temperature differences, pay attention to ventilation and place it in a spot with good air circulation.
