As a plant from the tropical rainforest, the Phalaenopsis orchid naturally loves warm, humid environments, so when the temperature suddenly plunges below 11°C it can easily cause damage to the orchid. So how should you care for a Phalaenopsis orchid after winter arrives?

What is the suitable temperature for a Phalaenopsis orchid? Generally speaking it is about 18°C to 30°C; as long as the environment stays within this range, the Phalaenopsis orchid can bloom without any problems. If the temperature is about 1-2 degrees lower, the plant may enter a dormant state and stop growing. If the temperature drops further below 11°C, the roots will be unable to absorb water and nutrients, and rot or loss of the entire plant's life will follow.

So what management tips are there after winter arrives? First, in winter when it is below 11°C, you must move the Phalaenopsis orchid back indoors, and try as much as possible to keep it away from cold air currents and drafty windows. Then, if ventilation is needed in winter, you can cover it with a plastic bag before taking it out to ventilate, try not to let it catch cold, and do not ventilate in the evening; it is best to choose the warmest time at noon. Finally, on especially cold nights, choose some heated protective covers to maintain the indoor temperature.

As for watering in winter, the Phalaenopsis orchid enters dormancy at around 15°C, at which time its growth rate is very slow and its water needs are reduced. At this point we only need to water according to the principle that the soil surface is slightly dry, generally once every 4-5 days. However, during this period you must also be careful not to let the soil become too dry, so as not to affect the flowering period, causing withered leaves and dropped flower buds.

As for fertilizing, besides needing fertilizer during the growing season, what the Phalaenopsis orchid dislikes most is being fertilized during prolonged low temperatures, because at this time it has already entered dormancy, the roots will no longer absorb any nutrients, and the metabolic rate also slows down. Therefore, in this situation, if growers still keep fertilizing it, the nutrients will all accumulate in the soil, easily causing problems such as root rot. Therefore, if you want to fertilize, you must wait until the temperature warms up again before resuming fertilization.
