Hoya is a beautiful and easy-to-care-for indoor foliage plant, and it can be propagated in many ways, mainly including stem cuttings, layering and leaf cuttings. The specific steps and precautions for these three propagation methods are described in detail below.

Stem Cuttings

Stem cuttings are one of the most commonly used ways to propagate hoya and are suitable for most seasons, but spring and autumn are best.

Materials to Prepare

Growing medium: mix leaf mold, perlite and vermiculite in a 4:2:2 ratio, or mix peat soil and perlite in a 1:1 ratio, to ensure the medium has good air permeability and water retention.

Cuttings: choose healthy branches free of pests and diseases, about 6-8 cm long, with at least 2 nodes and 2-4 leaves retained on each section.

Tools: scissors, chopsticks or bamboo skewers, plastic wrap.

Steps

Cut the cuttings at a suitable position on the branch, making sure the cut is smooth, and let the wound dry to avoid infection.

Put the medium into the pot, place the prepared medium into a flower pot, and press it down gently.

Make a hole and insert the cutting: use chopsticks or a bamboo skewer to make a small hole in the medium about 2-3 cm deep, then insert the cutting into the hole and gently press the surrounding medium firm.

Water and keep moist: water thoroughly to ensure the medium is moist, then cover the flower pot with plastic wrap to maintain humidity and temperature.

Care and management: place the flower pot in a warm and bright place (avoiding direct sunlight), check the medium moisture regularly, and keep it slightly moist. Generally, roots can form in 15-20 days, new leaves grow after 1 month, and after 3 months, when the roots have developed well, it can be planted in place.

Layering Propagation

Layering is one of the hoya propagation methods with a relatively high success rate, and it is suitable for plants with longer branches.

Materials to Prepare

Growing medium: mix peat soil and perlite in a 2:1 ratio.

Branches: choose vigorously growing branches free of pests and diseases, of moderate length.

Tools: scissors, sphagnum moss, plastic wrap, string.

Steps

Select a branch and choose a suitable position on it for layering, generally at a growth node.

Treat the branch by cutting a wound at the selected position, being careful not to cut it completely through. Then wrap the wound with sphagnum moss to increase the humidity for rooting.

Fix the layer by pressing the treated branch into the medium, making sure the wound is in contact with the medium. Then cover the outside with a layer of plastic wrap and tie it in place with string.

Care and management: keep the medium moist and check the growth of the layer regularly. Generally after 1-2 months, new roots will grow. At this point, the branch can be cut from the mother plant, with the cut made below the layered part, to form a complete potted plant.

Leaf Cuttings

Although leaf cuttings grow more slowly, they are also an interesting propagation method and are suitable when hoya leaves are relatively thick and fleshy.

Materials to Prepare

Growing medium: mix peat soil and perlite in a 1:1 ratio, or use vermiculite.

Leaves: choose healthy, pest- and disease-free, thick and fleshy leaves, especially robust leaves at the base of the branches.

Tools: scissors, rooting powder (optional).

Steps

Cut the leaves: use scissors to gently cut the leaves from where the leaf meets the stem, being careful to keep the petiole intact.

Treat the leaves: place the cut leaves in a ventilated, shaded place to dry for 2-3 days to let the wounds heal. If you want to increase the rooting rate, you can dip the base of the petiole in some rooting powder.

Insert the leaves: insert the treated leaves obliquely into the medium, with the petiole part inserted about 2-3 cm deep. Then gently press the surrounding medium firm.

Care and management: keep the medium slightly moist and avoid overwatering, which can cause rot. Spray water regularly to increase air humidity. Place the leaves in a bright and warm place, avoiding direct sunlight. Generally, new shoots can be seen growing after a few months.

The above are the three propagation methods for hoya. Each method has its own unique advantages and suitable scenarios. During propagation, maintaining suitable temperature, humidity and light conditions is the key to improving the success rate of propagation.
