What should you do if your home has little space but you love plants? Today we introduce this small foliage plant that is sure to suit you. It is the "Peperomia obtusifolia" (also known as baby rubber plant). As a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant, its flowering period is not fixed and it is rather difficult to bloom. Year-round it basically maintains an appearance of bright, white-and-green variegated leaves shaped somewhat like a broad bean, hence its name. So placing it in an indoor space that is not large can add a touch of green and vitality.

The flower language of Peperomia obtusifolia is neutrality, fairness, faith, and the gentleman. Therefore, buying one as a gift for a partner also symbolizes harmony between man and woman and a loving married couple. Generally speaking, it is commonly sold as a potted plant in flower markets, and its daily care is not too troublesome. As for light, it prefers diffused light. It grows best at an optimal temperature between 15°C and 25°C. If the summer temperature rises to 35°C, you should mist it to cool it down and increase ventilation. If the winter temperature drops to 10°C, you should place it in a relatively warm spot, otherwise the plant's growth will be affected.

As for soil selection, flower stall owners usually use garden soil. Using it for a short time is fine, but over the long term it easily leads to poor drainage. When repotting later, soil rich in organic matter can be preferred, as this can promote nutrient absorption.

As for watering needs, Peperomia obtusifolia does not have a high demand for water. Keeping the soil slightly moist is enough. The principle is to water thoroughly when you water, and avoid waterlogging. In spring and summer, which are also its growing seasons, the watering frequency should be appropriately increased, while in winter, which is its dormant season, the number of waterings should be reduced.

As for pruning and propagation, regularly pruning the dead leaves and overly long branches of Peperomia obtusifolia helps the plant grow healthily. For later propagation, it can be done by leaf cuttings or division.

Finally, regarding pest and disease control for Peperomia obtusifolia, the first thing is to regularly check the condition of its leaves. Generally speaking, its common pest is scale insects, which are mainly induced by high temperature and high humidity, poor ventilation, and insufficient light. After they appear, the insects usually gather in the center of the leaves, shaped like brown shells. As the insects keep reproducing, they secrete a sticky fluid, and this substance causes the plant to weaken and the leaves to turn yellow. An effective remedy is to move the potted plant outdoors, spray the plant with water to wash the insects off, or directly use appropriate chemical control methods such as buprofezin.
