I believe everyone has seen it during the Lunar New Year season. It bears hard red berries, its leaves stay evergreen all year round, and in spring and summer its flowers are even fragrant. This is Ardisia crenata, which some flower shop owners also call "fugui zi" (wealth and fortune seed). It grows vigorously and symbolizes good luck and wealth, so it is especially popular during the Spring Festival.

There has long been a folk saying that "red flowers indoors nourish the people and prosper the home." Ardisia crenata produces mainly white or pale green flowers in spring and summer, and by late autumn it bears clusters of red berries. The berries stay on the plant for a long time and can remain until the following spring, or even longer. It is also used to treat colds, coughs, asthma and similar conditions.

As for home care, Ardisia crenata likes slightly acidic soil, so when choosing soil you can use a mixture of peat moss and perlite, or buy a specialized indoor plant soil. For watering, during the growing season (flowering from May to June, fruiting from October to December or February to April of the following year) the soil should be kept moist, but during the dormant period the watering frequency should be reduced. In addition, make sure the bottom of the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogged roots from rotting. As for temperature, Ardisia crenata likes warmth and is not cold-tolerant. The suitable growing temperature is between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. It needs plenty of sunlight in daily care, but when the temperature is above 35 degrees Celsius it should be kept out of direct sunlight to avoid sunburn on the leaves.

Next, regarding fertilizing: Ardisia crenata does not need frequent fertilizing. During the growing season, mainly use nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer. To promote flowering and make the berries more brightly colored, you can also use potassium dihydrogen phosphate. In winter, fertilizing can be stopped. Pruning is also an indispensable part of good plant care. Regularly pruning dead leaves and dead branches not only keeps Ardisia crenata in good shape but also promotes new shoot growth, making the plant more compact and healthy.

Finally, regarding common problems, how do you treat yellow leaves, scorched edges, failure to bloom or failure to fruit? When leaves turn yellow, replenish water promptly and increase watering frequency in summer. If scorched edges appear, regularly mist the leaves and the surrounding environment to raise the ambient humidity. If it does not bloom or fruit, fertilize promptly and apply potassium dihydrogen phosphate once a month.
