Where is the best place to put a pussy willow at home? Care methods and precautions
Today I'm sharing a plant regarded as a bringer of wealth and thriving romance, the "pussy willow" (Salix argyracea), which is also the best-selling plant among Chinese New Year flowers. It has slender branches and colorful fuzzy catkins, and whether kept fresh or made into dried flowers, it suits indoor spaces and adds a harmonious artistic feel.

In home care, the pussy willow can be placed in a courtyard, office, living room and similar spots. Its care is not complicated either. For light, it likes full sunlight and dislikes harsh direct sun exposure; a spot near a window works well, because sunlight helps the plant grow and flourish. If the placement has insufficient light, you can use artificial grow lights to supplement the sunlight.
For watering, the pussy willow does not have a high water demand, and it likes moist soil. Its optimum growing temperature is 15-25°C. During the growing season, keep the soil alternately dry and moist, and when you water, water thoroughly. If winter temperatures drop to -10°C, its growth slows, and watering should be reduced accordingly.
For soil, the pussy willow is not fussy and likes fertile, loose, moist soil. It is recommended to use a humus-rich flowering plant soil directly.
If you want the plant to have abundant flowering branches, the fertilizing step is essential. It is recommended to add phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before the flowering period to promote blooming; during the rest of the growing season, apply fertilizer once a month, which can extend the flowering period. At the same time, note that fertilizing must stop in winter. For pruning, because the pussy willow is mainly grown for its branches, it grows quickly; to maintain its plant shape you must prune regularly, otherwise the branches tend to droop and break. It is recommended to prune in spring or autumn, which also promotes new branch growth.
In addition, regarding pest and disease control, the pussy willow is fairly resistant to pests and diseases. If problems appear later, they are most likely scale insects or aphids. If scale insects appear, they usually gather in the center of the leaves, weakening the plant and yellowing the leaves; in this case, it is recommended to move the pot outdoors as soon as possible, spray the plant with water to wash the insects off, or directly use insecticides such as buprofezin. If aphids appear, they mostly gather at the tips of the stems or on the flower buds, which affects plant growth and flowering; the response is to hang a yellow sticky trap near the plant, which can catch large numbers of the pests, or directly use insecticides such as imidacloprid.
