Summer has arrived, and observatories in many places have issued high-temperature warning signals. At this time, everyone has probably turned on their air conditioners or fans. However, in the passionate summer days, we may neglect our beloved plants. The following article will use the hot weather as an opportunity to discuss how to care for Phalaenopsis orchids that have entered a semi-dormant state.

As is well known, Phalaenopsis orchids like humidity but fear high temperatures. Especially when the outdoor temperature exceeds 32°C, they have already entered a self-protective state of "dormancy," slowing down their own growth rate to survive. Therefore, in this state, we as growers must also appropriately adjust our care methods. First, when the observatory issues a sustained high-temperature warning, try to avoid placing Phalaenopsis orchids directly in sunlight or outdoors. Move them to a cooler, more shaded and ventilated indoor location, or provide shade for them outdoors, because intense light will accelerate dehydration of the plant's leaves, thereby damaging them. In addition, maintain indoor ventilation to lower the indoor temperature. It is best to place them in an environment with a temperature range between 15 and 30°C.

Then, under high temperatures, water evaporation suddenly accelerates, so daily watering requirements change dynamically. If the Phalaenopsis orchid has already entered a semi-dormant state at this time, its water demand will be relatively low. If the Phalaenopsis orchid is in a normal state at this time, follow the principle of keeping the soil moist as the main approach, and watering can be done multiple times, but be careful not to cause root rot from overwatering. In addition, when the Phalaenopsis orchid is in a normal state, the soaking method can also be used for watering, which means allowing the roots to fully absorb water, but avoid getting water droplets on the leaves.

Finally, under high temperatures, promptly remove withered or wilted flowers and leaves, because some old leaves or yellowing leaves will drag down the metabolic rate of the Phalaenopsis orchid. Reasonably removing unhealthy flowers and leaves is equivalent to reducing the plant's burden and promoting new growth.

In conclusion, Phalaenopsis orchids are not very tolerant of high temperatures. Especially when the temperature continues to exceed 32°C, they will activate their own emergency state and enter dormancy. At this time, growers should promptly place the orchids in a cool and ventilated environment. If the plant has already entered dormancy, reduce the frequency of watering, and also promptly remove withered flowers and leaves to maintain a healthy growth state.
