In the hot summer weather, many flower lovers like to grow fragrant flowers at home, so that even if they come home sweating all over, a faint fresh fragrance at the door makes them feel refreshed and less bothered by the heat. Among the vast sea of flowers, the most popular fragrant flowers are gardenia and jasmine, but they look extremely similar in appearance, and many people cannot tell the difference between the two. Let's take a look together below.

Although gardenia and jasmine are both evergreen shrubs, they still have many differences in many details. First, gardenia flowers are large and full, usually blooming singly at the tips of branches, with broader and longer leaves, egg-shaped fruit, and relatively pointed flower tips. Jasmine, however, usually gathers three or more flowers on a branch, with small and compact flowers that often appear in clusters, 8-9 petals, leaves of varied shapes that are shorter, thinner, and have longer leaf stalks, and relatively round flower tips.

Also, their flowering times are different. Gardenia usually blooms in May each year, and in some regions, due to different climate and environment, it may continue blooming until August, with a flowering period of at most 1-3 months. Jasmine, however, has as many as three flowering periods, and it can be said to bloom continuously from early summer in June all the way to National Day in October (the first period is late June to early July; the second period is early August; the third period is early September to early October).
In terms of floral fragrance, gardenia and jasmine are clearly different. The former has a fragrance somewhat like creamy sweetness, giving people a fresh feeling, while the latter has a lighter fragrance, somewhat like the aroma of green tea.

In addition, their family and genus classifications are also different. Jasmine belongs to the Oleaceae family, Jasminum genus, while gardenia belongs to the Rubiaceae family, Gardenia genus. Jasmine likes to grow in humid and partly cloudy environments, while gardenia likes to grow in humid and acidic soil environments, so jasmine has no resistance to cold and drought, while gardenia has a certain degree of cold and drought tolerance. Finally, their growth habits and maturity periods also differ slightly, making these two flowers each distinctive in horticulture and appreciation.
