In fact, asparagus fern and cloud pine are ultimately the same type of plant, except that cloud pine is a smaller plant cultivated by flower growers through special techniques. In appearance, cloud pine is usually about 5cm~10cm tall, with thick needle-like leaves and jointed tissue on its stems and branches that looks similar to bamboo joints, and its overall form is upright and graceful. Asparagus fern differs greatly from cloud pine in height, growing 3-6 m tall, with slightly fleshy roots, extremely numerous and soft stem branches, leaf-like structures usually clustered in groups of 10-13, slightly hairy leaves, and 4-5 mm long.

Secondly, asparagus fern and cloud pine also differ in their places of origin and distribution. Asparagus fern is native to eastern and southern South Africa, and after naturalizing in China it is mostly found separately in central China, the northwest, the Yangtze River basin and various places in the south. After being cultivated in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, it is distributed across North China, Northeast China, Central China and East China.

Finally, asparagus fern and cloud pine also differ in their uses and value. Because asparagus fern is a somewhat larger plant and has feather-like leaves, placing it in the living room or on the entryway shoe cabinet gives a strong artistic feel. In addition, asparagus fern itself gives off a kind of odorless gas that is deadly to bacteria and mosquitoes in the air. Cloud pine likewise has the same ornamental value as asparagus fern, and because its branches and leaves are dense, it can absorb carbon dioxide and other toxic gases.

As for care, asparagus fern and cloud pine are both fairly easy plants to grow, but by comparison, cloud pine is more suitable for beginner flower lovers. It has low soil requirements but high water requirements, so in summer be sure to water it a lot, and keep the soil preferably moist. As for fertilizing, because it grows slowly, applying liquid fertilizer just once a month is enough. For asparagus fern care, it likes a humid environment but fears water accumulating in the pot, so the watering principle is to water when dry and stop when wet, and fertilizing requires fermented organic fertilizer, applied once a week using the method of frequent light fertilizing.
