Is the Velvet Plant Suitable for Indoor Growing? Care and Watering Tips
Velvet is a plant that lives up to its name: its petals open into a 6-pointed star shape, and its leaf surface is covered with a delicate velvet texture. Its leaves are usually dark green, while the undersides are bright red or purple, giving it a noble, distinctive elegance.
Velvet symbolizes good luck, representing a warm family atmosphere and an elegant quality of life. Cut flowers generally have a vase life of about 20 days. When choosing Velvet at a flower stall, try not to pick buds that are too immature, or they will be difficult to open. You can also check whether the cut end is fresh; generally bright green is best. If your Velvet refuses to bloom, you can take it with you when you shower and let the steam fumigate it, and it will bloom, but be careful not to rinse the flower heads with hot water. For normal fresh flowers, after bringing them home, unwrap them and cut the stems diagonally, then place them in a conditioning bucket filled with water and condition them for about 4 hours. Once conditioned, take them out and place them in a vase, add 1/2 to 2/3 water along with a preservative. Finally, cut the stems diagonally according to the height of the vase, change the water every 2-3 days, and each time wash the stems and the vase. If the stems feel a little soft, cut them off too. Avoid direct air conditioning drafts and just make sure there is good ventilation.
Velvet is a tropical plant native to South America and is also an ideal choice for indoor decoration. If what you bought is a potted Velvet, in everyday home care it prefers semi-shade, so try to avoid strong direct sunlight, otherwise the leaves can easily burn and it will fail to bloom. It is recommended to place it beside a window but not in a position directly exposed to sunlight.
As for temperature and humidity, the most suitable growing temperature for the Velvet plant is 18-27°C. In winter, when it is colder than 10°C, bring it back indoors. At the same time, maintaining a certain level of air humidity is also important; you can regularly mist around the plant to increase humidity.
For everyday watering, just follow the rule of keeping the soil slightly moist. A watering frequency of once a week is recommended, adjusted specifically according to the season and environmental humidity. In hot summer weather, the number of waterings can be appropriately increased. As for fertilizing, during its spring and summer growth, apply a balanced fertilizer rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium once a month to support its healthy growth.
