Causes of Rose Petal Rot and How to Treat and Prevent Gray Mold

Flower Cultivation By Lily Anderson 0 views
It is well known that roses are elegant and noble and carry the meaning of purity and beauty, but what should you do if gray mold strikes during the plum rain season while caring for them? Let's find out together below. Generally speaking, friends who have grown roses have all experienced gray mold on the petals. This disease, also called Botrytis cinerea, is a fungal disease and is contagious, so as soon as one flower is infected, the other flowers will gradually become infected as well. When it first appears, brown spots show up on individual petals, and in severe cases the entire flower head will rot. The cause of gray mold is mostly dampness, so remember that in daily care you must never spray water directly onto the rose heads.

However, rose gray mold looks quite similar to the crease marks on the guard petals, so how do you accurately tell whether a rose has gray mold or just crease marks on the guard petals? Here is a method for everyone: touch the discolored spot with your hand. If the edges are irregular, the petals are dry, and the petals are thick, this is generally just a crease mark on the guard petal. If the petals at the discolored spot feel thinner and rot as soon as you touch them, it is generally gray mold.

In daily care, crease marks on the outer guard petals generally need no special attention, but if it is gray mold and not too serious, we should first move the flowers to a dry, ventilated place for care to avoid dampness. Next, keep the container clean and regularly wash and disinfect the vase thoroughly. Then, when arranging cut flowers in a vase, try to choose a vase with a wide mouth, do not pack the flowers too tightly together, and leave some space between them to avoid localized dampness that leads to gray mold. Finally, ensure air circulation and do not put the flowers in a heated room that is too warm.

If the flowers already have gray mold when you just receive them, then you should immediately go to the seller and ask for a refund. If the gray mold appears while you are growing them yourself, then you need to remove it. If it is only one or two petals, just pick off the moldy petals and continue normal care. If several petals are affected, use scissors to cut them off directly and discard them. Here it is recommended that you keep flowers that have had gray mold separate from healthy flowers to avoid infecting the others.
