How to Tell the Difference Between Phalaenopsis 'Latin Dance Skirt' and Phalaenopsis 'Montpellier', and Which One to Choose
Nature is truly amazing; every individual is unique, yet a few may show mirror-like similarities and sameness. Today I will talk about two Phalaenopsis orchids with a very high degree of similarity, namely Latin Dance Skirt and Montpellier.
Both Latin Dance Skirt and Montpellier belong to the medium-sized dark-flowered Phalaenopsis orchids. When the two are placed together, whether in flower color, petal coloration, or the characteristics of the lip shape, they are much the same, and both have a horizontally flattened, round flower shape, with blooms around 6-7 cm across after opening. If a distinction must be made, Latin Dance Skirt's blush-shaded coloring feels slightly lighter, with petals usually mainly light purple or white, while Montpellier is a more deep-toned pure black, and some occasionally bear light red or brown markings. In addition, Latin Dance Skirt's petals are wrinkled, with the blush coloring painted on the petals like ink wash, while Montpellier's petals are thinner and therefore appear smoother.
Besides this, there is another marker that makes them very easy to tell apart, namely the buds: Latin Dance Skirt is black from flowering through to the bud stage, while Montpellier's buds are the normal slightly green buds of a Phalaenopsis, and the overall height of both flowers is on the shorter side. As for flower count, Montpellier is slightly ahead of Latin Dance Skirt by about 3-5 buds, but if Latin Dance Skirt is grown into its second year, its flower count will also rise accordingly, because with thick, strong roots, more buds will differentiate, so for the flower count of the two, it must be compared in relation to plant size and leaf size.
In terms of care experience, Latin Dance Skirt and Montpellier both come from the tropics, but Montpellier has more refined care requirements, demanding higher humidity and slightly lower temperatures; therefore, by comparison, Latin Dance Skirt is more suitable for beginners to grow, while Montpellier requires more attention and environmental changes, making it more suitable for more experienced flower growers.
Overall, the Latin Dance Skirt Phalaenopsis attracts people with its gorgeous dancing posture, while the Montpellier Phalaenopsis wins affection with its delicate color and form. Which one to choose mainly depends on personal aesthetic preference and growing conditions.
