Why Phalaenopsis Orchid Buds Shrivel and Drop, and What to Do About It: Can They Grow Back After Wilting?
Phalaenopsis orchids are loved by many beginner growers for their long blooming period. But during cultivation, many growers find that their Phalaenopsis orchids develop shriveled, dropping buds. So what exactly causes this phenomenon?

In fact, shriveled and dropping Phalaenopsis buds are mainly related to factors such as the temperature of the growing environment, water, insufficient light and insufficient fertilizer and water. As for temperature, Phalaenopsis orchids like to live in warm, humid environments, with the most suitable temperature between 15°C and 30°C. Within this temperature range, healthy growth of the orchid is well promoted, which favors the opening of the flowers. Conversely, if the temperature is below 10°C, the growth of the orchid is easily hindered, and at this point the buds lose their nourishment, dry up, shrivel and drop, and cannot open normally.

Water is also a very important factor for Phalaenopsis orchids, and at the same time, overwatering must be avoided. Generally, Phalaenopsis orchids mainly rely on aerial roots to absorb moisture from the air. If the air humidity of the growing environment is relatively high, for example, in the rainy season, watering can be reduced. It is suggested to refer to the dryness of the potting medium: if the potting medium shows signs of drying out, then you can water, but never keep the potting medium constantly moist, as this easily causes root rot and will also affect the buds.

Phalaenopsis orchids like to grow in shaded places, but this does not mean they do not need light. During the growth and blooming period of Phalaenopsis orchids, light is very much needed, because sunlight is the catalyst for flower bud differentiation, so the orchid can be kept in a place with plenty of scattered light. What needs to be pointed out here is that strong light must be prevented, because Phalaenopsis orchids cannot tolerate scorching sun; if exposed to scorching sun for a long time, the leaves and flowers are easily withered. The above is roughly the reason why Phalaenopsis orchids develop shriveled and dropping buds. Growers can check whether there is anything wrong with their daily care methods and make adjustments accordingly.
