Is the Amethyst Phalaenopsis worth buying? Home cultivation methods and precautions
Summer is here, and I'd like to share with you a summer-blooming Phalaenopsis orchid. Its name is refreshing - it's called Amethyst.

Why is it named Amethyst? First, its main color is light purple, and second, its petals have a built-in shimmer after they open, hence the name. Besides the shimmer, another feature is that its lip has a velvety feel, and this velvety texture is completely different from its petals, making it very uniquely beautiful. It's also the pride of orchid enthusiasts. As a summer-blooming type, the Amethyst produces many flowers, with an ornamental period lasting the entire summer, and it also carries a fragrance similar to Chanel, smelling like a sweet scent akin to peppermint.

Is the Amethyst Phalaenopsis the most recommended to buy? Regarding the price of Amethyst, it's generally sold in flower markets for around 20 yuan per plant, which is quite cheap. By contrast, some rose cut flowers at the same price can only be enjoyed for a few days at most, but if you buy an Amethyst, you can enjoy it for at least two to three months, and with good care it can bloom all year round.
How do you grow the Amethyst Phalaenopsis? First, for the pot you can choose a plastic pot or ceramic pot - the key point is to ensure there's a drainage hole at the bottom, and the diameter shouldn't be too large. The planting medium should be "sphagnum moss"; other alternatives include moss, fern roots, bark, charcoal, clay pellets and other soils. So what should you pay attention to for home cultivation? First, regarding light, care should be gentle - diffused light is most suitable for Phalaenopsis. Its temperature requirement is 20-25 degrees Celsius. In summer, it's best to place it in a cool, ventilated spot, while in winter, never open windows for ventilation during care, and once the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, it should be moved back indoors for care.
Then, watering should follow the principle of "water when dry, stop when wet" - you can touch the sphagnum moss of the Phalaenopsis with your hand, and when you find it slightly dry, it's time to water it. During high summer temperatures, you may need to water once in the morning and once in the evening. Finally, regarding fertilizing, apply thin fertilizer more often before the flowering period arrives, and add a small amount of phosphorus or potassium fertilizer before each watering to help with flower bud differentiation.
