Why do Phalaenopsis orchids wilt before blooming? A must-read for beginners
Speaking of Phalaenopsis, it is probably the orchid variety everyone is most familiar with. Its flowers are shaped like dancing butterflies, and its meaning is "happiness is flying to you," which is why it is a classic Chinese New Year flower. But when beginners grow Phalaenopsis, they often encounter the situation where the flowers wilt before they even open. What exactly is going on?

Many people, when growing Phalaenopsis, find that the buds have been out for more than a month and still refuse to open, and the buds even shrivel. This is generally caused by two reasons. The first is that you have chilled it. The temperature requirement for Phalaenopsis is 20-25 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is too low, it naturally cannot open. In winter care, never open the windows for ventilation. When carrying it home from the flower shop, you can cover it with a plastic bag to avoid stimulation from cold wind.
The second is lack of water. During the flowering period, do not restrict water too severely. You can touch the Phalaenopsis's sphagnum moss with your hand, and when you find it is slightly dry, you should water it. Never let it dry out completely. Because in the vast majority of cases, when the sphagnum moss dries out completely, it will definitely be accompanied by shriveling. Normally, Phalaenopsis can bloom for 3-6 months. If beginner flower growers encounter shriveled buds and do not deal with them in time, then of course they will not open. At this point, when shriveled buds have already appeared on the Phalaenopsis, they should be pinched off promptly.

Regarding the situation of lack of water, some flower growers also say that even after watering the Phalaenopsis, shriveling still occurs?
This situation is also because the lack of water in the Phalaenopsis was not discovered in time, because as long as you observe carefully, the shriveling definitely appears before you water. This is because the flowers take some time to react. Only when it is severely short of water will shriveled buds appear. Even if water is added immediately after discovery, a portion of the buds will inevitably be affected. In addition, there is another situation where the flowers have faded and the buds have wilted. In this case, just open the flowerpot and take a look, and you will find that the entire root system of the Phalaenopsis has rotted. At this time, it will likewise cause water to be unable to be absorbed, resulting in flowers fading even after watering the Phalaenopsis.
Key point: For normal care of Phalaenopsis at home, you only need to water once about every 7~10 days, which can basically completely solve the problem of lack of water.
