The second Sunday of May is Mother's Day. How could the balcony and coffee table be without the "carnation," known as the mother's flower, on Mother's Day! The carnation is a plant with a super abundance of flower buds, and it is also the legendary lawn that blooms. At the same time, the carnation is a perennial flower; if grown well, it will keep blooming continuously year after year, so how should it be grown, and what techniques are there? Let's discuss my methods together below.

Tip 1: Try to avoid buying those flowers that are already fully bloomed; choose carnations with lots of flower buds.

Tip 2: Carnations like a semi-shaded, semi-sunny environment, so their light requirements are not especially high. Placing them near a ventilated, bright window with scattered light is most suitable.

Tip 3: The carnation is a flower that likes neither especially dry nor especially wet conditions, so the principle for watering is to wait until it has dried out thoroughly before watering. In addition, note that when watering, never pour water directly onto the flower soil; you can choose a shallow basin one size larger than the carnation pot and let it absorb water by itself from the bottom of the pot.

Tip 4: In summer, take care to avoid spots that are prone to rain, because after rain its lower leaves easily turn yellow, and in severe cases it may even rot at the roots or die outright.

Tip 5: For daily care, spent flowers after blooming should be pruned promptly; doing so allows its nutrients to flow back to new growth points. If you see new young shoots emerging, you can also pinch off the tips. If it has already grown many leaves, just trim it evenly with scissors. Also note that potted carnations are different from the fresh-cut carnations in flower shops; potted carnations need timely pinching and pruning, whereas fresh-cut carnations do not need the pruning step.

Tip 6: After purchasing a carnation, it is recommended to repot it into a flowerpot one size larger than before, choosing loose, breathable soil. As for fertilizing, you can dilute monopotassium phosphate with water at 1000 times, then use it to drench the roots, and at the same time supply it with sufficient phosphorus and potassium fertilizer.
