Tamsui First Fishing Harbor environmental improvement completed, old street and sunset harbor embankment reflections add distinctive character

(Taiwan TB News Network / Reporter Sun Yao-chang) After the comprehensive fishing harbor water environment improvement project, New Taipei's Tamsui First Fishing Harbor has not only improved the original harbor area's insufficient hinterland and poor circulation, but fishermen's working space has also been improved. The harbor embankment reflections, combined with Tamsui's old street and sunset, further enhance the local character, and it remains one of the top choices for people heading out for sightseeing.

The New Taipei City Fisheries Department stated that Tamsui First Fishing Harbor has numerous attractions nearby, including the Mackay Memorial Hospital Tamsui Branch, the Chen Cheng-po Outdoor Art Museum, the Dodd & Co. Trading House, the Chi Po-lin Space, the Tamsui Customs Wharf, and the Tamsui Fishery Life and Culture Image Museum. Among them, the old oil depot machine room beside the fishing harbor, which had been abandoned for a long time and had gone through more than 60 years, was transformed on February 14, 2007, into the "Tamsui Fishery Life and Culture Image Museum" with white walls and green window lattices. Beside the door stands a green retro large mailbox, and on the museum's wall, the red old fuel pump that once supplied fuel to fishing boats is fully preserved, along with black-and-white photographs displaying the rich former charm of Tamsui. Outside the museum is the "Fishing Harbor Embankment Reflection," one of the Eight Scenes of Tamsui. Coming here in the evening, the moored boats in the harbor sway with the waves, seabirds either fly through or rest on the edges of the boats, and sitting on the long bench outside the museum facing the sea breeze, following the angle of the long embankment to gaze at the distant Guanyin Mountain scenery and enjoy the sunset glow on the Tamsui River surface, such an atmosphere and charm make it seem as if one has returned to the old times of the small town of Tamsui, experiencing a time-travel journey.

Chang Li-chen, Director of the New Taipei City Fisheries Department, stated that today's Tamsui First Fishing Harbor, after the comprehensive fishing harbor water environment improvement project, has not only improved the original harbor area's insufficient hinterland and poor circulation, but fishermen's working space has also been improved.

The First Fishing Harbor is now a popular check-in spot, easily reachable by bicycle and tourists alike. It is the hub connecting Tamsui Old Street to Fisherman's Wharf. Visitors can walk from the old street to the fishing harbor and stop there, extending the connection to the Customs Wharf. Whether day or evening, it gives the public one more new space for recreation activities. It is hoped that after the pandemic gradually subsides, the public can take proper self-protection measures, maintain social distancing, wear masks properly and carry alcohol disinfectant with them, and come to the First Fishing Harbor to experience the harbor's new appearance.
