MIT green energy industry chain! Taipower sets another record with Taiwan's largest ground-mounted 150MW Tainan solar farm

Following its completion in 2019 of what was then Taiwan's largest 100MW (100,000 kW) solar farm in the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park, Taipower last year went further by using 214 hectares of abandoned salt flat land in the Jiangjun and Qigu districts of Tainan, deploying 480,000 solar panels to again build Taiwan's largest ground-mounted solar farm, the Tainan Salt Field Solar Farm, with an installed capacity of 150MW (150,000 kW); Taipower held its inauguration ceremony on March 31. Taipower said that once completed, the project ranked as the 46th largest in the world, and was moreover an "MIT green energy industry chain" built together with nearly 10 domestic equipment suppliers. After completion, it can generate more than 200 million kWh of green power each year, supplying the annual electricity needs of more than 50,000 households, and also brings a carbon reduction benefit of 114,000 tonnes per year, while still retaining the site's existing flood detention function.

Taipower explained that the Tainan Salt Field Solar Farm uses 214 hectares of abandoned salt flat land in the Jiangjun and Qigu districts, with an investment of 9.65 billion yuan, uses more than 480,000 high-efficiency solar panels, combines both ground-mounted and water-surface solar modes in keeping with the local environment, and drives nearly 40,000 precast concrete foundation piles to raise the solar panels 2.1 m high, creating the nation's largest solar farm with an installed capacity of 150MW, while at the same time preserving the existing flood detention function of the salt flat land. Among these, everything from the solar panels, cables and communication lines, brackets and foundation piles, to the inverters and step-up transformers that help feed the generated power into the national grid, is manufactured and supplied entirely by local Taiwanese businesses.

Taipower pointed out that the Tainan Salt Field Solar Farm was fully connected to the grid at 150MW on September 14 last year, generated 100 million kWh on February 12 this year, and currently generates an average of about 615,000 kWh per day; as of the 30th, cumulative power generation had reached 120 million kWh. After the official inauguration, it is expected to generate more than 200 million kWh per year, supplying the annual electricity needs of about 57,000 households, and delivering a carbon reduction benefit of 114,000 tonnes per year.
