Taichung Meat Market Transforms and Revitalizes, Livable City Upgrades Again
The Taichung Meat Market has long suffered from pollution problems such as odors, noise and wastewater. To improve the living quality of local residents, Taichung Meat Company is promoting the revitalization and transformation of the original site, removing slaughtering and auction operations while retaining wholesale and semi-wholesale services and maintaining fresh pork supply, transforming it into a mixed-use shopping mall that balances environmental protection and consumer demand. Regarding the employment needs of slaughterhouse workers, the Taichung City government said on the 15th that the Labor Affairs Bureau will work with the labor union to further understand the specific needs of its members and provide follow-up assistance; for those willing to change careers, vocational training will be arranged to help them find employment.
The Taichung City Agriculture Bureau pointed out that the main source of hogs in Taichung is live hogs transported from counties and cities in the south to the market for auction and slaughter. The transport process produces problems such as drifting odors, noise and wastewater discharge, and in addition the meat market's equipment is old and its operating efficiency poor, which has long had a huge impact on the lives of nearby residents. In line with the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan's push to modernize fresh meat supply through cold-chain transport to improve freshness and extend shelf life, Taichung Meat Company is therefore promoting the "revitalization and transformation of the original site" of the Taichung City Meat Market, removing slaughtering and auction operations and planning to transform it into a mixed-use shopping mall, aligning with central government policy while improving the living quality of local residents.
In addition, the Taichung City Agriculture Bureau is fully assisting suppliers and consignees in transferring their operations. Meat markets in nearby areas have already completed preparations to take over auction and slaughter operations, ensuring stable market supply, and consignees can move their trading to nearby markets.
