To protect the 7,600-year-old algal reef, more than 70 civic groups across the country have launched the second-stage petition for a referendum to preserve the Datan algal reef. As of yesterday (2/24), a total of 123,700 signatures had been collected, still some way from the safety threshold. Students from 30 universities nationwide have joined the coordinated effort, setting up booths on campuses this week to push the algal reef referendum petition toward its goal, and academics have stepped up as well, standing up in support and calling on everyone to sign together!
