Techniques for Freeze Protection and Growth Recovery of Flowers and Nursery Stock in Greenhouses and Polytunnels

Most flowers and nursery stock cultivated in greenhouses and polytunnels have poor cold tolerance. After heavy snow or freezing rain, the main problems are stunted growth and freezing damage to the aboveground parts. By using inner shelters within greenhouses and polytunnels for insulation and heating, gradually raising the temperature, and combining this with pruning, fertilization and other techniques, the growth of flowers and nursery stock can be promoted.

Technical Overview

1. Promptly clear snow and frost from the roof of the structures, reinforce the supports, and prevent the polytunnels and greenhouses from being crushed and collapsing.

2. Seedlings being propagated, potted flowers, and some New Year flowers, rare flowers and landscaping nursery stock should be moved into polytunnels and greenhouses for insulation as much as possible, and double-layer films and insulating quilts should be covered in time to prevent cold air from penetrating.

3. In overcast and freezing rain weather, pay attention to timely heating and supplemental lighting, maintaining light intensity at around 20,000 lux, and control the lighting duration according to growth characteristics. For warmth-loving flowers and nursery stock native to tropical and subtropical regions, the temperature should be maintained above 12°C; for other flowers and nursery stock, it should be kept at around 8°C, with a minimum no lower than 5°C.
