Pruning and shaping flowers this way brings better blooming results
Through experiments we know that whether a flower can bloom is determined by its growth state. Usually, when sugars dominate in the plant body, flowering is promoted. When the plant grows weakly, flower buds cannot form; but when growth vigor is very strong, flower buds also cannot form. This is a contradictory point, but in production, for some flowers with less strict requirements for vernalization and light conditions, pruning and training can guide nutrient transport to control the plant's vegetative growth, preventing its branches and leaves from becoming too lush, so that it shifts toward reproductive growth and blooms earlier. Here we mainly introduce the method of changing the flowering period through pruning and shaping, to achieve the effect of regulating flower blooming.
Control methods
Removing leaves from flowers at the early or late stage of growth can also change the flowering period. During cultivation, using ringing treatment on over-vigorous and overlong water sprouts and extension shoots, and using root cutting treatment on overly vigorous plants, both have the effect of promoting earlier flowering. In addition, over-vigorous flowers can be girdled, cutting the phloem of the plant with a knife down to the xylem, with a width of 1/4-1/3 of the circumference, carried out in early spring, which can promote flower bud formation.
For some woody flowers, when vegetative growth reaches a certain level, as long as environmental factors are suitable, they can bloom multiple times. Pruning methods can be used to make woody flowers sprout new branches and bloom continuously, such as Chinese rose and Guangdong coral tree.
Pinching the plant can stop the growth of the main branch and promote the germination of axillary buds on the main branch, thereby producing more flowering branches, so pinching is an important means of increasing the number of flowering branches. Bud removal is also one of the commonly used measures; removing side buds can concentrate nutrients and promote the blooming of the main bud; conversely, if the main bud is removed, the side buds can be used, thereby delaying flowering.
Through the above methods, we can obtain plants with different flowering times under the same growing environment and change the flowering period.
