How should water be controlled for the flowering bougainvillea to bloom abundantly

As everyone knows, for flowering plants, water control treatment generally needs to be taken in time before flowering, so that the plant can accelerate the formation and differentiation of flower buds, develop mature buds, and finally bloom smoothly as expected.

Bougainvillea is a typical flowering plant that needs timely water control before blooming, but many growers are troubled by questions such as why bougainvillea needs water control, how to control water, and to what extent water should be controlled. Today the editor will share this knowledge with everyone.

First we need to clarify why water control is given to bougainvillea. Because the flowering of bougainvillea is related to many specific requirements or conditions, such as the temperature must not be lower than 13°C, with 15°C being suitable; another example is the need to provide sufficient light, ensuring 6 hours of light per day, and so on.

Water control needs to be considered according to the size of the bougainvillea plant, its growth state, and other aspects. The time for water control for bougainvillea usually needs about 1 month, carrying out continuous, sustained water control for it, so that the plant's leaves appear slightly wilted and drooping. Water control is meant to let bougainvillea smoothly transition from normal vegetative growth to reproductive growth, accelerating the formation and differentiation of flower buds.

After the water control ends, we also need to promptly restore watering for the plant, otherwise even if flower buds have formed and buds have developed, it is still not enough for them to bloom fully and smoothly. It may also cause the flowers to wither and drop prematurely, thereby shortening the flowering period, which is a situation none of us want to see.

If all other conditions are met and the bougainvillea still does not bloom for a long time, we need to promptly carry out continuous water control for it. At least 3 weeks of continuous water control is needed, and partly done over certain periods. Then when the leaves appear slightly wilted, water thoroughly again, and the plant's leaves will return to normal, then continue water control the next day, and carry on this cycle.

The purpose of our water control is to control the growth of branches and leaves. Even if the branches grow thicker and the leaves grow plumper and larger, if it does not bloom, it is all in vain. Through water control, nutrients are returned to the branches, and when the branches age, flower buds will differentiate. Of course, water control is only one of the most critical conditions for promoting flower bud differentiation, and controlling water alone without fertilizing will not work either.

Normally when we care for bougainvillea, it is recommended to evenly sprinkle some slow-release fertilizer in the pot, and during the water control period, dilute monopotassium phosphate with water and use it to drench the roots of the plant 1-2 times, and at the same time spray some monopotassium phosphate as a supplement. Only by doing so can flower bud differentiation be promoted and the plant bloom abundantly.
