Microplastics found in seafood, Greenpeace: People in China eat a plastic straw's worth every year
Having fish every year will turn into having plastic every year! Plastic pollution seeps in everywhere; single-use plastic products break down into plastic particles, are ingested by marine life, and accumulate through the food chain to enter the human body. Based on statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Greenpeace estimates that each person in China ingests an average of 16,300 plastic particles per year from seafood, weighing about 1.05 grams, equivalent to one plastic straw.
According to domestic research literature from the past five years, shellfish account for the largest share of plastic particles ingested from seafood. Greenpeace calls on the Environmental Protection Administration to strengthen source controls on single-use plastic products and to bring takeout and delivery under regulation as soon as possible; to strengthen plastic restrictions, raise fees and increase incentives, and to promote reuse and accelerate the phase-out of single-use plastics.
