Common flower diseases and pests and their control

Different flowers have different growth habits and different requirements for the environment. Because of many inappropriate care methods and seasonal factors, flowers suffer from diseases and pests. So what are the common flower diseases and pests, and how are they controlled?

Common flower diseases and pests include powdery mildew, rust, black spot, leaf curl, and chlorosis, as well as pests such as longhorn beetles, aphids, scale insects, and scarab beetles.

Control methods for common flower diseases

1. Keep the flower cultivation site clean and hygienic, which can reduce damage.

2. Protect the plants; do not let the skin break or become damaged, and guard against pathogen invasion.

3. Pre-disinfect the growing medium, which can kill pathogens and pests.

4. Strengthen daily management, keep water and fertilizer appropriate, air circulation good, temperature suitable, and light moderate, so that the plants grow robustly and the breeding and spread of diseases and pests are controlled.

Flower damping-off: when the temperature rises and the environment is hot and humid, some seedlings and flowers prone to root rot are highly susceptible to damping-off. When diseased seedlings are first found, irrigate with 1% ferrous sulfate or 200-400 times 50% amobam solution, applying 2-4 kg of the solution per sq m. Control watering during the tender seedling stage, and do not let the soil become too wet.

The control method for flower rust is to spray 700-1000 times 15% triadimefon solution at the early stage of infection. Diseased buds can also be picked off and burned to eliminate the source of infection.

Flower powdery mildew, for example on Chinese rose, garden balsam, and smoke tree, tends to occur in May and June, causing leaves to turn yellow and new buds to become deformed. Control methods: pay attention to ventilation and light transmission, apply less nitrogen fertilizer and more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer; if infected in the early stage, spray once with 700-1000 times 15% triadimefon solution for control.

Control methods for common flower pests

The activity of flower aphids is clearly affected by temperature; as the temperature rises, aphids reproduce faster. The control method is to spray 40% omethoate or 50% phosmet diluted 1200-1500 times with water. For a small number of potted flowers, 70-100 times neutral laundry detergent solution can also be sprayed.

The control method for flower red spider mites is to frequently rinse the front and back of the leaves with tap water, or spray or dip with 100-150 times paste water that has been boiled and cooled, then rinse once more with clean water after one or two days, which can produce obvious results.

The control of flower scale insects should be based on their living habits; before their eggs hatch, they can be removed manually, and frequent inspection should be carried out. At the larval hatching stage, 1000-1500 times 40% omethoate solution can also be sprayed.
