Are colored face masks safe? Consumer Foundation testing finds lead in 3 masks and low PM2.5 filtration efficiency in 6 samples

In response to the covid-19 pandemic, masks have become a daily necessity for people nationwide. However, testing by the Consumers' Foundation, Chinese Taipei (hereinafter referred to as the Consumers' Foundation) found that some masks contain the heavy metal "lead" and volatile organic compounds, and also leach colorants, while the PM 2.5 filtration efficiency of 6 samples was insufficient. Yet the competent authorities have not established quality standards for the materials used in mask production. People hang masks over their noses and mouths every day, and although this blocks the covid-19 virus, who will help ensure the safety standards of the masks themselves?

Consumers' Foundation: masks priced above 3 yuan are considered expensive

In December of last (2020) year, the Consumers' Foundation purchased 20 mask samples from hypermarkets, drugstores and e-commerce platforms in Taipei City and New Taipei City, of which 19 were medical masks and 1 was a disposable dust mask. According to the investigation, the labeling of all the masks complied with regulations, but the prices were slightly high.

The Consumers' Foundation pointed out that the production cost of a mask is between 1.3 and 1.8 yuan, and after deducting necessary management and marketing costs
