Control of Common Flower Diseases

During growth and reproduction, flowers often suffer from diseases. If not controlled in time, they will not only affect the normal growth and reproduction of the flowers, but in severe cases may even cause death. The common flower diseases and their control methods are introduced as follows:

(1) Rust. It mainly harms roses, Rosa multiflora, Chinese rose, etc. The leaves, stems and flower buds of affected plants produce orange-yellow and black powder. Control methods: apply a reasonable mixed fertilizer of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; drain promptly if the soil is too wet; once the disease occurs, prune out diseased branches and leaves; spray 65% zineb wettable powder at 500-600 times dilution.

(2) Powdery mildew. It mainly harms chrysanthemums, Chinese rose, Rosa multiflora, roses, etc. A layer of white powdery substance grows on the branches and leaves of diseased plants, the leaves curl and wither, and the branches become deformed; in severe cases the flowers are small and few, or the plant even dies. Control methods: promptly prune out diseased branches and leaves; spray 25% carbendazim at 700-800 times dilution, or 70% thiophanate at 8000-1000 times dilution.

(3) Anthracnose. It mainly harms cacti, cyclamen, hydrangea, orchids, etc. Purple-brown or light-brown diseased spots grow on the leaves and stems of affected flowers, and in severe cases the leaves wither. Control methods: pay attention to ventilation and light transmission; control soil moisture; promptly prune out the affected parts; at the early stage of the disease, spray 70% thiophanate at 500-600 times dilution, or 50% carbendazim.

(4) Viral disease. It mainly harms narcissus, peonies, lilies, dahlias, etc. Diseased plants show mosaic, deformity, spots and other symptoms. Control methods: weed frequently, pull out and burn diseased plants; spray chemicals to kill aphids, whiteflies and so on.

(5) Black spot. It mainly harms roses, Rosa xanthina, Chinese rose, Rosa multiflora, etc. Black-brown spots appear on the affected leaves and cause leaf drop. Control methods: promptly remove dead branches and fallen leaves, and carry out pruning and shaping; pay attention to cleanliness and drainage; spray 130-160 times equal-strength Bordeaux mixture, or 50% carbendazim at 500-800 times dilution.

(6) Brown spot. It mainly harms chrysanthemums, Prunus triloba, etc. There are brown spots or black-brown spots on the leaves of diseased plants, and the leaves gradually turn black and die. Control methods: immediately prune and shape, remove diseased branches and leaves; drain and remove moisture; spray 100 times equal-strength Bordeaux mixture, or 50% zineb wettable powder at 600 times dilution.
