Executive Yuan rushes fishery-solar co-existence "go go go," environmental and social review approves 2,626 hectares of priority zones, environmental groups worry that "haste makes waste"

Yesterday (10/28), the Ministry of Economic Affairs conducted an environmental and social review of fishery-solar co-existence priority zones, approving the designation and announcement of a total of 2,626 hectares of priority zones in Chiayi County and Tainan City. But civil groups still have many doubts about fishery-solar co-existence, believing that the Executive Yuan, under pressure from solar power companies, is pushing it through hastily. The Ministry of Economic Affairs promised that within one month after the announcement, it would complete the legalization of ecological review and the content of standardized contracts.

Li Chun-li, deputy director-general of the Bureau of Energy of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, said that yesterday's meeting only approved the review, and the formal announcement time would be jointly issued by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Council of Agriculture, though the exact time has not yet been confirmed. Due to the insistence of civil organizations, the Ministry of Economic Affairs also promised to set up a one-month buffer period to complete related supporting measures.

Li Chun-li emphasized that both fishery-solar co-existence priority zones in Chiayi County and Tainan City had been identified by ecological experts, and disputed areas had already been excluded. The announced area in Chiayi County is 876 hectares, while the Tainan portion was originally set at 1,776 hectares. After identifying 26 hectares of fish ponds in northwestern Xuejia District as being adjacent to Xuejia Wetland and a waterbird hotspot, the announced area was reduced to 1,750 hectares.
