1. Stories of an agricultural society -
The mother of Mr. Zhang Qiuwen, chairman of the Chaocuo Development Association, married into Chaocuo from Datun at the age of eighteen and has settled in Chaocuo for seventy years. The antique washbasin stand from her dowry is still well preserved. When she was young, around 1965 (the 54th year of the Republic of China), she opened a grocery store. Before that, she had worked at a sugar company, where the pay and benefits were good, with wages paid on the 1st and 15th of each month. She also farmed. She said that in the past they were very poor and had no money to pay the water rent, and she recalled that whenever the water rent was due, they had to borrow money from everywhere to pay it to the irrigation association. At the time, the water rent owed to the irrigation association was too high, and they simply could not make ends meet, so when Mr. Zhang was young, he and some friends formed a five-person group to protest at the irrigation association.
2. Preservation of old architecture -
Mr. Zhang said that when he was a child, he lived in an adobe house (tujiao cuo), and old photos from that time are still kept. It has now been rebuilt into a modern multi-story house. At present, the community still preserves many century-old buildings, including traditional three-sided courtyard houses, bamboo houses, and old pigsties. Some of the old houses still have elderly people living in them, while most of the bamboo houses and pigsties are no longer in use, have long been in disrepair, or are piled with lots of waste. One of the more special ones is the old residence of the formerly prosperous Wu family, which still keeps well-preserved century-old murals.
