For Mid-Autumn Festival, eating pomelo means going all in! Pomelo blossom craft beer, pomelo salt barbecue, pomelo-scented steamed fish - using everything from flower to fruit, turning sales pressure into business opportunities
At Mid-Autumn Festival, it's not just about eating pomelo and mooncakes - pairing them with a glass of pomelo beer tastes even better! Over the past six months, the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (hereafter referred to as Hualien DARES) has been developing processing techniques for pomelo flesh, peel and blossoms, with fruitful results. Today it unveiled more than 20 kinds of processed pomelo products, including bread, frozen treats, tea bags, dipping sauces, handmade soap and cleaning agents. It has also turned pomelo peel, pomelo blossoms and pomelo flesh into three craft beers - "You Hua Nai Xiang," "You Jian Bai Lu" and "A You Pi Pi" - allowing pomelo to appear on the dining table in a dazzling variety of forms.
Fruit from newly planted pomelo trees is large, but its quality is inferior to the delicious small fruit of old pomelo trees. If these secondary-grade fruits flow into the market, they will affect overall pomelo prices. Both the Ruisui Farmers' Association and the Dongshan Farmers' Association in the eastern pomelo production areas believe that the diverse processed products developed this time are quite helpful to the pomelo industry, as they can turn the sales pressure of large pomelo fruits into business opportunities.
The three craft beers have unique flavors: drinking them brings, respectively, the delicate aroma of pomelo blossoms, the sweet-and-sour taste of pomelo flesh, and the distinctive essential-oil scent of pomelo peel. Hualien DARES revealed that one company is already in talks for technology transfer, and other companies are welcome to inquire as well.
