The Only One in the Province: Yilan County Red Pomelo Quality Evaluation Competition Results Announced

This year, Yilan County's red pomelo went through sorting and had safe pesticide use controls, and the overall quality, taste, flavor, and sweetness were all extremely excellent. Yilan County - specially held the "109th Yilan County Red Pomelo Quality Evaluation Competition" on the morning of yesterday (the 24th) at the Dongshan Township Farmers' Association, hoping to establish a brand for Yilan red pomelo, let consumers eat with peace of mind, simultaneously improve the quality and safety of agricultural products and product profits, and also take into account the income of Yilan County fruit farmers.

County Magistrate Lin Zi-miao stated that Dongshan Township is one of the main production areas for red pomelo in the province. Dongshan red pomelo is sweet and sour, juicy, and highly nutritious, with thick flesh, high water content, and a moderately sweet-and-sour taste and texture. It is rich in nutrients such as fruit acids, dietary fiber, carotenoids, anthocyanins, flavonoids, vitamin C, and various minerals, and is one of the best alkaline foods.

In this competition, Dongshan Township won the Grand Prize with Lin Bo-xun. Farmer Lin Bo-xun studied on his own, improved quality, and devoted himself to pest and disease control in order to reduce the amount of pesticides used and improve product quality. The other winners were: First Prize: Huang Jin-yi; Second Prize: Liao Xi-hui; Third Prize: Zhang Shu-hui. Pomelo farmers from Dongshan Township were invited to participate in the evaluation competition, with a total of 15 participants, and all passed the county's comprehensive pesticide sampling inspection and met the safety standards for pesticide residues. In addition, this evaluation was scored in two stages: the field inspection portion accounted for 30%, and the fruit, flavor, and appearance accounted for 70%. On the day of the evaluation, personnel from the Agriculture and Food Agency of the Executive Yuan Council of Agriculture and the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station served as judges to conduct the fruit evaluation.
