Grounded in local culture yet internationally recognized! The coastal-guarding installation art "Sea General's Crown" wins design awards in Paris and Italy!

The installation art "Sea General's Crown," designed around the concept of Taiwan's grouper fish species, stands in front of the Yunlin Kouhu Visitor Center beside Provincial Highway 61 (the West Coast Expressway). Its vibrant colors catch the eye, and it has recently become a popular photo spot. After winning a bronze medal at Italy's international A' Design Award in April this year, it won again this month at the 2020 Paris DNA Design Awards, making it the best example of "the more local, the more international"!

"Sea General's Crown" was designed by rural artist Chen Yu-liang and built by the team of Hsieh Tung-che, chairman of the Taiwan Craft House Association and a master of local Chiaochih pottery. It transforms Mazu, the sea goddess of traditional folk belief, into the image of a sea general, takes the form of Taiwan's specialty farmed fish, the giant grouper, and uses vibrant colors and elements to present the diverse ethnic groups of Taiwan.

Chen Yu-liang said that Kouhu has beautiful fish ponds, ocean and wetlands. In the past, because it was remote and had few living resources, it rarely received attention, and he hoped to use art to give people a reason to visit the area. Hsu Chen-neng, director of the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan Coastal Area National Scenic Area Administration, said that compared with the previous high-heel crystal church, the Sea General's Crown incorporates rich local emotion. Not only are outsiders drawn to take photos there, but local people also like it very much, and more local elements will be added to public art in the future.
