How should daffodils be cultivated so that they bloom on schedule?

Key cultivation points for getting flowering daffodils to bloom on schedule

Flowering daffodils are mostly used for decorating the environment for holidays such as Christmas, New Year's Day, Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, and Valentine's Day. To make them bloom on schedule, the following points should be noted:

First, choose suitable bulbs and a water-culture timing. Generally speaking, it is best to choose bulbs that are large and slightly flattened, because such bulbs contain more buds and will produce more flowers later. Since the bulbs already store enough nutrients, the growing process only requires keeping the water clean, so they are suitable for water culture.

The time from the start of water culture to flowering is 25 to 40 days, and the specific number of days is affected by various conditions. Different regions can determine when to begin soaking the bulbs according to their local climate conditions and timing needs. Taking Zhangzhou daffodils as an example, if flowers are needed for New Year's Day, they need 40 to 50 days of water culture, while for blooming at Spring Festival they need 25 to 27 days of water culture to bloom.

Second, light is an important factor affecting daffodil flowering. Daffodils like light, and a shaded environment will delay their flowering period. In the early stage of water culture, they should be placed in a cool place at 10°C to 18°C for water culture, and after new roots grow, they should be moved to a sunny place. During water culture, the plant should receive no less than 6 hours of direct light each day. If conditions permit, full sun is even better. When the plant is found to be flowering ahead of schedule, it can be appropriately shaded to ensure it blooms on schedule. In addition, more sun exposure can make the daffodil's flowers and leaves strong and improve its ornamental value.

Third, flowering daffodils like warmth, avoid high temperatures, and are not cold-tolerant. They grow well within the temperature range of 5°C to 20°C and have high ornamental value. If the ambient temperature exceeds 25°C, it will cause blind flowers. During water culture, the temperature within a day should vary by 7°C to 8°C, and constant temperature should be avoided. In addition, during the cultivation period, frost must be strictly prevented, otherwise the leaves and flower buds will become yellow and withered, reducing their ornamental value.

Fourth, after the daffodil flowers open, try to avoid direct sunlight on the flowers, because excessively strong light will shorten the life of the flowers. Place them in a slightly warmer place during the day, and at night move them to a cool place, so that the flowers can stay open longer.

Fifth, during the water culture of flowering daffodils, attention should be paid to the problem of blind flowers. If the selected bulbs are of poor quality or have severe mechanical damage, or if the water is not changed frequently, sunlight is insufficient, the temperature is too high, or the temperature is constant, blind flowers can all be caused. For the blind flower phenomenon, the appropriate remedy should be applied according to the cause to prevent it.
