Top-dressing tips for different types of flowers

Plants cannot grow without nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but different plants also have different fertilizer needs. Today, the Chuzhan editor will introduce to everyone how to top-dress different types of potted flowers, so friends, hurry up and learn.

1. Top-dressing for bulbous and succulent flowers

Because bulbs and succulent stems can store nutrients, and their root systems are relatively small, their top-dressing amount can be halved compared with the normal amount. Since they have relatively high requirements for nitrogen, potassium and calcium, when using formulated liquid fertilizer, potassium nitrate and calcium nitrate are often used as the main components in combination.

2. Top-dressing for fibrous-rooted flowers

Such flowers need to be planted in loose media, such as Rhododendron hybrids and ornamental bromeliads.

Top-dressing requires small amounts applied many times, with the top-dressing amount being 1/5-1/4 of the normal amount, that is, applying 15-30 granules of compound fertilizer per pot each time is enough.

3. Top-dressing for large-leaved foliage flowers

These flowers grow rapidly, have well-developed root systems and require a large amount of fertilizer, such as Rohdea japonica of the Araceae family. In addition to top-dressing twice a month at the normal amount, applying 100-120 granules of compound fertilizer each time, also add 5-8 sprays of formulated liquid fertilizer.

4. Top-dressing for bonsai

The characteristic of bonsai fertilization is that the amount should be small and the fertilizer effect should last long. Generally, slow-acting organic fertilizers such as bone meal and cake fertilizer are used as the main body, mixed with slowly released urea-formaldehyde, rock phosphate and a small amount of quick-acting fertilizer.

If there is no ready-made special fertilizer for bonsai, you can use commercially available flower fertilizer wrapped in olive oil or plastic film liquid treatment, and then it can achieve sustained and long-lasting effects. Just bury the fertilizer shallowly under the substrate at the edge of the pot.
