Detailed Explanation of Pruning Techniques and Methods for Crape Myrtle Flowers
Crape myrtle flowers not only come in rich, vivid colors, but also have a long blooming period. The flowers of crape myrtle all grow on the new branches produced in the current year; the more new branches, the more flowers. However, since crape myrtle has very weak sprouting ability, it is difficult for it to sprout without stimulation through pruning, so pruning crape myrtle directly determines the number of flowers. Without pruning, few new branches will sprout, and the tree cannot be covered with abundant flowers.
Crape myrtle flowers tolerate pruning well. Before sprouting in spring, first cut off thin, weak branches and overly dense branches, and at the same time shorten all other current-year branches to 2-3 cm.
After sprouting in spring, when the new shoots grow to 10 cm long, carry out one round of tip pinching, leaving only 2-3 buds at the base. Soon 2-3 branches will grow. When these branches grow 6-7 leaves, carry out another round of tip pinching. This can control the tree shape and promote more branches and more flowers, but the flower clusters will be somewhat smaller. The leaves that grow after tip pinching will become smaller, which can enhance the ornamental value.
The flower clusters of crape myrtle flowers bloom at the tips of the branches. After the first batch of flowers opens, the spent flowers should be cut off. After topdressing with fertilizer, the plant will grow for a period and can bloom again. The main targets for pruning crape myrtle are the old branches that have already bloomed. Pruning must be carried out in spring after leaf drop and before sprouting.
For all branches that have already bloomed in the current summer and autumn and have already set fruit, they should be cut back by about two-thirds, retaining only 3-4 pairs of buds at the base, with the base stub length preferably around 8-10 cm. When pruning, the cut should be flat, and the wound should not be torn. After pruning, the cut branches and leaves should be gathered and burned.
