There is an art to fertilizing flowers: master the three-look method

The "three looks" of fertilizing flowers

First, look at the season.

In winter, temperatures are low and plant growth is slow; most flowers are in a state of stalled growth and generally are not fertilized. Spring and autumn are the peak growing periods for flowers, when roots, stems and leaves grow, flower buds differentiate, and young fruits swell, all of which require relatively large amounts of fertilizer, so appropriate extra topdressing should be applied. In summer, temperatures are high, water evaporates quickly, and it is also a vigorous growth period for flower plants, so the concentration of topdressing should be low, but it can be applied more frequently.

Second, look at the variety.

Different varieties of flowers have different fertilizer requirements, so different fertilizers should be applied. For example, osmanthus and camellia like pig manure but not human feces and urine; southern flowers such as rhododendron, camellia and gardenia avoid alkaline fertilizers; flowers that need heavy pruning every year require a larger proportion of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote the sprouting of new branches; foliage-oriented flowers can be given more nitrogen fertilizer; fruit-oriented flowers should have watering appropriately controlled during the flowering period; bulbous flowers should be given more potassium fertilizer to help the bulbs become plump.

Third, look at the growth condition.

Especially for potted flowers, the amount used should be determined by the growth condition. Adhere to the principles of four more, four less and four not: four more means apply more when flowers appear yellow and thin, apply more before sprouting, apply more when buds are forming, and apply more after flowering; four less means apply less when they are thriving, apply less when sprouting, apply less when flowering, and apply less during the rainy season; four not means do not apply when growth is leggy, do not apply when newly planted, do not apply in the height of summer, and do not apply during dormancy.
