Fertilizing methods and precautions for household potted flowers

I. Application methods and amounts of base fertilizer

1. Field-grown flowers

(1) If farmyard manure is sufficient, broadcast application is preferred. Spread it evenly, then turn it into the soil with a shovel.

(2) Band application: first open a furrow with a pickaxe, then apply the fertilizer into the furrow; this method is called band application.

(3) Hole application: first dig holes, then apply organic fertilizer or chemical fertilizer into the holes, then mix it with the soil in the holes using a hoe; this method is called hole application. When the amount of fertilizer is small or a quick-acting fertilizer is used, hole application is preferable.

2. Potted flowers

Mix the soil and fertilizer evenly, then for every 1 cubic m of soil add 1 kg of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer or other chemical fertilizer, or 1.5 kg of superphosphate, or 2 kg of ferrous sulfate.

II. Methods and amounts of topdressing into the soil

1. Field-grown flowers

(1) When topdressing, the type of fertilizer, the number of applications and the application method should be decided according to the flower species, the purpose of fertilization, etc. At the same time, water promptly after topdressing so that the fertilizer dissolves.

(2) Ring-shaped fertilization is mostly used. When fertilizing, apply it 15-20 cm away from the plant. Never apply fertilizer directly against the plant, otherwise the flowers are easily burned to death.

(3) Farmyard manure can be applied in bands in a furrow, and after application cover it with soil in the ridge. Apply 1-1.5 kg of farmyard manure and 20-30 g of chemical fertilizer per 1 sq m of land.

2. Potted flowers

In addition to ring-shaped fertilization, it is best to apply dilute liquid fertilizer. When applying chemical fertilizer, it is best to broadcast the chemical fertilizer in the pot and water it so that it dissolves into the soil.

III. Foliar topdressing

1. Various trace element fertilizers, urea, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, superphosphate, etc. can all be used as fertilizers for foliar topdressing.

2. Percentage concentrations of various chemical fertilizers used for foliar topdressing: urea 0.5%-1%; superphosphate 1%; ferrous sulfate 0.2%-0.5%; zinc sulfate 0.05%-0.2%; borax 0.1%-0.25%; ammonium molybdate 0.05%-0.2%; copper sulfate 0.2%-9.4%.

3. It should be noted that the concentration for foliar topdressing should not be too high, and the number of applications should not be too frequent.

IV. Fertilization precautions

1. Fertilization time

Different flowers have different nutrient requirements at different growth stages. For example, apply more nitrogen fertilizer at the seedling stage to promote seedling growth; apply phosphorus fertilizer at the bud and flowering stages to promote larger and more vivid flowers; when fertilizing potted flowers, choose to fertilize in the evening. Avoid fertilizing around midday in high temperatures or on rainy days.

2. Fertilization frequency

During the peak growth period of flowers, apply dilute fertilizer water once every 7-10 days; after autumn, apply once every 10-20 days. Fertilization should follow the principle of "small amounts, many times" or "light fertilizer, applied frequently."
